Nana Patole, head of the Congress party in Maharashtra, has denied any issues between Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), their ally in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition. He says the seat-sharing talks for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections are still going well, despite rumors of a clash over seat distribution.
Patole stated to NDTV, "I am friends with Sanjay Raut. I don’t understand why people try to create conflicts between us."
Reports of tension began when Raut recently commented that Congress leaders in Maharashtra "rely on leaders in Delhi" for making decisions. Patole had responded, "If Sanjay Raut is controlling Uddhav Thackeray, that’s their issue." Both Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) reportedly want to contest 100 seats each in the 288-seat Assembly.
The MVA alliance has so far divided 85 seats each between Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (led by Sharad Pawar), but talks are ongoing for around 5-10 remaining seats. Patole said that after October 30, MVA leaders will meet again to finalize the seat-sharing. According to him, national parties like Congress and regional parties like Shiv Sena each have their goals, which is natural. He assured that Congress is focused on securing a majority for the MVA in Maharashtra.
Congress has emerged as a strong player after winning the most seats in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year. But its unexpected loss in Haryana gave allies more influence in negotiating seat distribution.
The Maharashtra Assembly election is set for November 20, with results to be announced on November 30.
