Top Economist Bibek Debroy Passes Away at 69

Bibek Debroy, the chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) and a respected economist, has passed away at the age of 69. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over Debroy’s passing.

In a message shared on social media, PM Modi said, “Dr. Bibek Debroy was a brilliant thinker who knew a lot about many subjects like economics, history, culture, politics, and spirituality. His work has made a lasting impact on India’s intellectual world. Apart from his public policy work, he loved making ancient Indian texts accessible to the younger generation.”

The Prime Minister also posted a picture of himself with Debroy.

Who Was Bibek Debroy?

Bibek Debroy was a famous Indian economist, author, and scholar. He played an important role in shaping India’s economic policies and was known for translating ancient Sanskrit texts like the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita, making them easier for modern readers to understand.

Debroy went to school at Ramakrishna Mission School in Narendrapur and later studied at Presidency College, Kolkata, Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught at several institutions, including Presidency College in Kolkata and the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in Delhi. He also worked on legal reforms in a project for the Ministry of Finance and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

He was a key member of the NITI Aayog, India’s top policy-making body, until June 2019 and contributed regularly to newspapers.
